SOCIAL MONITORING EXPERT GROUP

There has been an increased interest for sustainable supply chains and sourcing in the last few years. Sustainability encompasses environmental as well as social issues. Social compliance is rarely monitored in the agri-food sector because of limited experience and research. Social issues have been identified such as forced labor, discrimination, child labor etc. Social indicators have to be identified and new tools for social monitoring have to be designed to foster improvement in social, labor and human rights compliance.

The Social Monitoring Expert Group explores digital social monitoring solutions to foster social and labor improvement in the seafood and agri-food supply chains. It identifies relevant indicators for each of the areas under consideration, and develops appropriate metrics for the indicators. The expert group co-designs and trials digital monitoring solutions to measure and prevent risks, using Verifik8. This makes it the first in-kind verification system to provide a comprehensive analysis of social performances. As a result it mainly enhances agricultural practices to reduce environmental and social impacts.

12 categories of metrics have been identified, including workers’ representation, child labor, fair recruitment, fair disciplinary procedures and freedom of movement. These metrics are put into the Verifik8 application, combining environmental and social data. The data collected is benchmarked against different certification standards. Lastly, the data is crosschecked and triangulated with different other sources of information.

The Social Monitoring Expert Group enables compliance to several Sustainable Development Goals by collecting reliable data. This is done through partnerships and by triangulating and crosschecking with external data-streams.
